25 Aug 09 Explore Android with HTC Magic Workshop Report

I attended the Explore Android with HTC Magic Workshop at PJ Live Arts Studio, Jaya One organized by SiS, the distributor of HTC phones in Malaysia.

It was a brief one hour workshop which promotes the HTC Magic, and includes a brief history of the HTC phones, starting from Dopod.

The presenter, Alan made a demo with a video recorder and demonstrated the customization of the Android home screens such as adding shortcuts easily to the homescreen and downloading Android applications online with an Application Manager downloaded from http://drop.io/mroidstore/.

Alan also showed the number of clocks available for selection and the convenient way of bringing up the contact list.

I believe the event was targeted towards new Android users or for those who are interested with the HTC Magic and would like to know what Android is all about.

So I was a bit surprised to see among the crowd, there were a few HTC Magic users. During the Q&A session, most users were voicing out the concern on the difficulties of doing a sync from the phone with their computer.

The workshop ended with light refreshments and also a booth for those who would like to purchase the HTC Magic at a one-day promotional price of RM 1,999. (I remembered seeing CIMB advertisement of getting the Magic at RM 1999 too though.)

The HTC Magic is due to have an update soon, which will incorporate the HTC Sense (currently available on HTC Hero) into the HTC Magic phone, which stands to be a advantage for getting the HTC Magic phone too as the price is lower.

During the registration, each attendee was given a brochure “Android” Lessons for HTC phones. I would say it’s a good start seeing HTC starting consumer education with events like these.

I’m pretty confident HTC will be doing well with Android phones in the future.
