23 Jul 09 Watch Out for Android

android
iPhone, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Symbian, Palm Pre, had better be watching out for Android.

Android is coming up as a major player in the smartphone among handset makers due to the it being open source and makers can freely (including no licensing fee) modify the code to suit their product.

It is visible that HTC had been the major Android leader and had even customized the Android with HTC Sense UI.

There are approximately 10 manufacturers developing handsets for Android including HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Acer.

Even without an estimated numbers of Android out there, it might just be able to beat the recent iPhones (selling over 5.2 million iPhones during the last quarter) and Palm Pre (fewer than 250,000 units mid-July).

With support from Google (and also its promotional effort to developers – Android Developer Challenge) and an application marketplace, other smartphone players better keep an eye on Android.

20 Jul 09 Acer A1 Android

Apparently, Acer is a fan of Android, or so it seems.

Acer will be having Android in their netbooks and also in one of their upcoming 9 smartphone models.

Out of the 9 smartphone models for the year, one will be an Android, while a number of the remaining to be Windows Mobile.

The Acer A1 is expected to be out as early as September.

I guess we could look out for some leaked information or sneak preview anytime sooner than September.

That’s the trend now, don’t you think?

14 Jul 09 Android and XP to dualboot in Acer Netbook

acer

Acer is expected to launch its previously announced dual-OS netbook, with both Windows XP and Android, in August 2009.

Windows XP and Android side-by-side.

Digitimes reported that since Acer still needs to pay licensing fees for Windows XP on the netbook, the product is unlikely to be priced lower than XP-only models.

I personally would wonder what good will come out of having Windows XP and Android on a netbook.

Mind you it’s not even a notebook, so with two OS on a netbook, my guess is that the netbook is a thick or high-end netbook rather than a 10 inch screen with a few GB in SSD. :-)

And for a typical Windows XP user, would the Android OS be useful? I doubt so.

Maybe it helps for those who like to play with Android on a bigger than smartphone device? I’m not sure.

Although Android is free, it’s still early to tell how Android is going to move in the netbook market. Do not forget that Chrome OS is coming out too.

Maybe it’s Acer promotional stint kinda thing or this upcoming netbook could just be a testing platform for Android as the operating system.

Whichever it is, Acer will still earn the first manufacturer of netbook with Android OS.
